How the calculator works

Each estimate is weight × spot price per gram × purity × buyback rate. Spot price comes live from gold-api.com (USD per troy ounce, converted to per gram using 1 oz = 31.1034768 g).

Platinum purity reference

Platinum purity is given as a decimal fraction (the "millesimal fineness"). The calculator uses standard hallmark values:

• .999 — Fine platinum, 99.9% pure (investment bars, lab-grade)
• .950 — PT950, 95% pure (the dominant US and European jewelry standard)
• .900 — PT900, 90% pure (common in Asian jewelry and older pieces, often alloyed with iridium or cobalt)
• .850 — PT850, 85% pure (lower-grade jewelry, more common outside the US)
• .750 — PT750, 75% pure (rare, mostly older pieces — roughly the platinum analog of 18K gold)

Why 70–90% buyback rates?

US platinum scrap buyers typically pay 70–90% of the metal value — similar to gold. Platinum has a professional refining market and a clean assay pathway, so clean, testable lots near the top of the range aren't hard to find. Pawn shops and mall kiosks sit at the bottom. 80% is a useful mid-market target when comparing offers.
